FESTIVAL OF INDIA 2002,
This film is about Amudha
– an adopted girl child who finds that she is not the real progeny
of her father and mother. She came to know about this at her ninth
birthday. Her life is shattered. Her all dreams and ideals are
grounded to dust. Her life comes to a standstill.
Amudha wants to find her
‘real’ mother and runs away from home. The entire family
understands her anguish and rallies around her. In her pain she
lashed out and she shrivels up. She rejects her adopted mother’s
overture; saying ‘you are not my mother’.
Her father, Thiruchelvan,
unable to bear his child’s turmoil promises to help her search for
her mother. Their quest takes Thiru, Indira and Amudha to war torn
areas of Sri Lanka. Amudha’s conflict and confusion; her angst and
trauma from heart rending questions he needs her mother to answer.
Mani Ratnam is a commerce
graduate from Madras University and also a master of Business
Administration from Bajaj Institute of Management-Mumbai his debut
directorial venture was Pallavi Anupallavi (Kannada), which won
the Karnataka State Award for the Best Screenplay.
